New Shooter FAQ

First time with a firearm? Here's what to know before you visit.

I've never shot a gun. Can I still come in?

Yes. A lot of our visitors are first-timers, and a trained staff member will get you set up and walk you through loading, grip, stance, and safe handling before you step on the line. We'd recommend bringing a friend or family member along, but coming solo is perfectly fine. Want more structure? The Basic Handgun Course through Sabin Academy is built for beginners.

Do I need my own gun?

No. We rent handguns, rifles, and shotguns by the session and sell ammo in-house, so just bring a valid photo ID and you're set. Rental age is 18+ for long guns and 21+ for handguns and our full-auto rentals.

How old do I have to be to shoot?

18+ to shoot or rent long guns on your own; 21+ for handgun and full-auto rentals. Minors can shoot only with a parent or legal guardian present and supervising, who signs the Range Waiver for them.

Buying is separate from shooting. Long guns and ammo are 18+. Handguns and handgun ammo are 21+, and to purchase a handgun in Nebraska you'll also need a valid Nebraska Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) or a Nebraska Handgun Purchase Permit.

What should I wear and bring?

Closed-toe shoes and a high-neck shirt (hot brass is real, skip the deep V-necks). We provide eye and ear protection, or bring your own. Bring a valid photo ID for everyone in your group.

What does it cost the first time?

Lane time starts at $12 per half hour, plus rental, ammo, and targets. No membership or appointment needed. See the Range page for pricing.

Is it safe? What are the rules?

We're a self-regulated range, so every shooter is their own Range Safety Officer and responsible for safe handling. The basics: treat every gun as loaded, never point at anything you're not willing to destroy, finger off the trigger until you're on target, and know your target and what's beyond it. Staff brief you and are there to help.

Can I bring a group?

Yes. Groups, date nights, and birthdays are welcome. Everyone signs their own waiver and brings a photo ID. For larger groups, call ahead at (402) 315-1140 so we can have lanes ready.

Should I take a class first?

Not required, but it helps. A beginner lesson covers the fundamentals so your first range trip goes smoother. Going for a concealed-carry permit? The Nebraska Conceal Carry Permit class with Sabin Academy is the direct route.
